FHI 360 Hosts Forum on Women and ARVs for HIV Prevention

NOV-04-11  FHI 360 held a forum on Sept. 29, 2011 in Washington, DC highlighting both opportunities and challenges for using antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) to prevent HIV acquisition in women.  Although several clinical trials in the past year have shown ARVs to be potent tools for reducing HIV transmission, the same social and economic factors that drive the global epidemic present challenges for bringing ARVs to women most at risk. The event featured experts across a range of areas related to HIV.

A Call to Action on PrEP Demonstration Projects

AUG-30-11 During the National HIV Prevention Conference in Atlanta, a coalition of agencies issued a call to address questions about the real world potential for PrEP to benefit gay and bisexual men and transgender females by establishing a comprehensive and well-coordinated set of demonstration projects.  That call includes a discussion of important goals for the demonstration projects, and key questions they should seek to answer. CNIHR Requests Proposals from Young Investigators for Research Grant Program

AUG-29-11 The Creative and Novel Ideas in HIV Research Program has announced another opportunity for early career investigators with no prior experience in HIV research to submit proposals for their research grant program.  The program is sponsored by the National CFARs, the Office of AIDS Research and the International AIDS Society.  Winners of the CNIHR program will be awarded up to $150,000 Direct Cost per year for up to two years, as well as funding to attend future IAS meetings.  To access the CNIHR page click here

AUG-17-11 The coordinated approach to accelerating medical discovery in HIV/AIDS began 15 years ago with a White House initiative called the Keystone National Policy Dialogue on the Establishment of Studies to Optimize Medical Management of HIV Infection.  Now, the independent public-private partnership formed in response to this effort -- the Forum for Collaborative HIV Research -- is re-releasing the landmark report that set the research strategy for scientific advancement in HIV/AIDS, co-infection and universal HIV testing.

Studies show new progress in HIV testing in emergency departments

JUL-29-11 A CDC sponsored supplement released in the Annals of Emergency Medicine details new HIV testing efforts in Emergency Departments. "Emergency departments play a critical role in helping people learn their HIV status, connecting them to life-prolonging care, and helping them avoid transmitting the virus to others"said Jonathan Mermin, MD, Director of CDC's Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention.

Controlling the HIV Epidemic: The Promise of ARV-Based Prevention

JUN-29-11  AVAC, EATG, and the Forum will host a satellite meeting at IAS 2011 on July 17. The meeting and discussion will argue the case for making HIV epidemic control the goal of prevention, and for assembling the required expertise, and deploying essential resources, to conduct needed studies.
