2017 Washington Area Interns Networking Day

On August 9, 2017, the Forum for Collaborative Research hosted the fifth-annual Washington Area Interns Networking Day.  Leading experts from government, industry, and advocacy organizations specializing in HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, Liver Diseases, among other areas, gathered for a panel discussion to provide career advice and share personal experiences navigating the fields of Public Health and Public Policy. The Question & Answer portion of the program allowed interns, exploring the next steps of their careers, to direct specific queries to panelists. A networking reception followed.

A few pieces of memorable advice from the panelists:

Dare to be different - always.

Step out of your comfort zone; if you remain there, you will become stagnant.

Even if you're good at something, it doesn’t mean you’re passionate. You have to find your passion and others will be able to see that.

Say "yes" to things. Be open to new experiences and don’t be afraid to try new things.

Continue to put yourself in situations that will force you to grow.

Focus on what you do very well and invest in those areas.

Do what gets you out of bed in the morning. Do work that you would gladly do for free.

Discover your niche.

Explore what sets you apart from others.
