Are you or someone you know looking to expand your skills or brush up on a certain area of public health? The School of Public Health On-Campus/Online MPH degree program—the first online professional degree program offered at UC Berkeley—has been very successful to date and we’ve recently added a track in Health Policy and Management. Now, we are taking our online education further by offering more degree concentrations and introducing single course and certificate enrollment options.
In the coming months we will be introducing new Public Health Certificates to complement our already popular online MPH degree. These certificates—composed of 3 or 4 specialized courses—will focus on specific areas such as Global Health, Geographic Information Systems, Health Management, Leadership and Innovation, and Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
Starting in January 2017, we are introducing single courses available for immediate enrollment, with a few more courses starting in March 2017. Single Course Enrollment Offerings - January 2017
Introduction to Environmental Health Sciences (PH W200F)
You will receive a general introduction to the core concepts of environmental health (i.e. exposure assessment, toxicology, epidemiology and risk assessment) and learn ways to examine environmental health issues by applying core concepts. You will also get a brief introduction to methods for measuring pollutants in the environment and to effectively control environmental hazards. Your instructor: Amod Pokhrel PhD
Evaluation of Health and Social Programs (PH W218)
This course guides you down the path of a public health evaluation—from the initial planning stage to implementation and sharing results. The course addresses both qualitative and quantitative methods. Your instructor: Mara Decker DrPH, MSH
Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response (PH W257)
This course explores the role of public health officials in disaster scenarios. Examination of case studies will expose you to the interplay of relevant government agencies and disaster response systems. Your instructor: Robyn Gershon PhD
Economics of Population Health (PH W226C)
Explore the economics evidence base and tools to evaluate economic factors and interventions that shape the health of populations. You will learn cost-effectiveness analysis tools and be able to understand and apply key cost-benefit analysis tools used by economists to evaluate the relative effectiveness and costs of policies and interventions. To enroll:
- Create a student profile through UC Berkeley Extension and submit an application ($125 fee). Note that even though we use Berkeley Extension for enrollment, these are regular UC Berkeley courses and students receive a transcript with full Berkeley credit.
- Within 3 days CalCentral will send you an email to prompt you to create or reactivate CalNet ID.
- Log on to CalCentral and navigate to "my academics" to submit your class request form.
Deadlines:
Payment deadline is the first day of class, January 9. You can drop the course for a full refund up to six days after the course start date.
Cost:
Each course is $3,309 to enroll for the semester.
