The Bureau of Communicable Disease (BCD) at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYCDOHMH) is seeking an experienced public health physician to lead the Viral Hepatitis Program (VHP).  BCD oversees surveillance and outbreak investigations for more than 70 reportable diseases.  Within the Bureau of Communicable Disease, the Viral Hepatitis Program conducts surveillance and outbreak investigations for more than 70 reportable diseases.  Within the Bureau of Communicable Disease, the Viral Hepatitis Program conducts surveillance and applied research, policy and program development and implementation, program evaluation, provider training, community outreach, and public awareness initiatives, in the areas of prevention, linkage to care and treatment for Hepatitis B and C.

Duties Will Include But Not Be Limited To: 

  • Update and continue the implementation of the DOHMH's Viral Hepatitis Strategic Plan-covering adult hepatitis B and all hepatitis C activities in coordination with both internal(HCV Advisory and Policy Groups) and external partners.
  • Oversee Hepatitis B and C Surveillance, including preparation of annual reports, new approaches to using surveillance data to measure patterns of care and impact of interventions, and hepatitis B and C outbreak investigations, with a focus on healthcare associated infections.
  • Oversee all direct services program interventions, including screening and linkage to care and treatment programs in collaboration with community and healthcare partners. Develop and implement program-wide evaluation and, where applicable, quality management, to ensure that programs are effective.
  • Oversee community outreach and public messaging initiatives, develop health education campaigns and oversee the Hep B Coalition and Hep C Task Force.
  • Oversee the programmatic aspects of all grants and outside funding related to viral hepatitis, ensuring that all deliverables are met, progress reports and reapplications are accurate and completed on time and in collaboration with administrative staff, that funding is spent appropriately.

Minimum Qual Requirements:

  1. Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York plus valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in an approved medical specialty; and four years of medical practice including one year of experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity; or
  2. A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to that listed in "1" above. However, all candidates must have a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York, and one year of medical practice in an administrative or supervisory capacity.

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of viral hepatitis; Master in Public Health or other public health or program development and implementation training
  • Experience in program development, implementation and evaluation, including using data to monitor quality improvement
  • Grant writing experience; supervisory and team-building experience
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills, and ability to communicate expertly with clinical and non-clinical providers
  • Ability to handle multiple and diverse assignments.
