Background

The meeting, co-sponsored by The Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator (OGAC), took place on November 16, 2009 in Washington, DC. Stakeholders from the areas of government, academia, industry, and the not-for-profit sector met to discuss the latest updates in technological development for HIV diagnostic and monitoring technologies in resource-limited settings. Point-of-care (POC) technologies included CD4 tests and viral load (VL) tests utilizing dried blood spots (DBS) and other novel methods.

Objectives

1)    Review the current status of technology (in use and in development) for HIV diagnosis in infants, and pediatric/adult treatment monitoring

2)     Review current status of research (standardization, validation, implementation) of laboratory technologies for infant diagnosis and pediatric/adult treatment monitoring

3)     Review available data informing the utility and cost-effectiveness of laboratory based pediatric/adult treatment monitoring

4)     Discuss what additional information is required for informed decision making regarding the best use of laboratory based treatment monitoring

5)     Discuss strategies to generate the needed information
