In Mourning

Red RibbonWe at the Forum for Collaborative HIV Research deeply mourn the deaths of all of the 298 persons on Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, among them many individuals traveling to the International AIDS Conference in Melbourne. There are no words to adequately describe the loss to the field caused by this shocking and horrifying event. An International AIDS Conference without Joep Lange is unimaginable – made even sadder because this new reality is forever. Together with the global AIDS community, we grieve the loss of this exceptional leader, colleague, mentor and collaborator. We remember the ceaselessness and tirelessness of his commitment to ensure treatment of all people no matter who or where, his persistence in pushing the envelope of regional and global policy, and his insistence on the utmost rigorous science and impatience and intolerance of anything but.  Most of all, we remember his human side – honest, direct, often blunt but always caring friend to many of us.  Our sincerest condolences to family and friends of Joep Lange, Jacqueline van Tongeren and the other victims of the crash.
