The AIDS Institute Releases HCV Testing Coverage Guide

In recognition of National Hepatitis Testing Day, the AIDS Institute has released a Hepatitis C Testing Coverage Guide to assist health care providers with navigating each of the major healthcare payers' coverage options for preventive services, specifically for HCV screening.

Please consider signing your institution or organization on to a letter to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology in support of including sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) functionality as a certification requirement for Electronic Health Records under the meaningful use program in 2017. Such a move could dramatically increase SOGI data collection in health care settings, and allow us to better understand and address LGBT health disparities.

A new website provides the most up-to-date guidance on appropriate care for practitioners who treat patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV).HCVguidelines.org, developed by IDSA and the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease (AASLD) in collaboration with the International Antiviral Society-USA (IAS-USA), offers evidence-based, consensus recommendations for the screening, treatment and management of patients with HCV.

amfAR and TAG Call for a Strategic Research Agenda Needed to End HIV/AIDS in the United States

The Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) and Treatment Action Group (TAG) called for a deliberate and expedited research agenda designed to begin to end the AIDS epidemic in the United States. The new report, Filling the Gaps in the U.S. Treatment Cascade: Developing a Community-Driven Research Agenda, summarizes key implementation science research priorities developed at a June 2013 gathering of HIV community activists, researchers and policy makers, and health care providers. Participants identified critical areas for research and policy to address gaps in the United States continuum of HIV care, also known as the HIV treatment cascade.

EMA advises on compassionate use of daclatasvir

FDA Approves Olysio (simeprevir) to treat chronic hepatitis C virus infection

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Olysio (simeprevir), a new therapy to treat chronic hepatitis C virus infection. Olysio is a protease inhibitor that blocks a specific protein needed by the hepatitis C virus to replicate.
